Dell Wireless 5520 WWAN Windows 7 Driver and enable GPS

Due to dell old installer's limitation, you won't able to install DELL 5520 (EU860D/EU870D) driver on your newer model laptops or under windows 7.  But actually the driver file does support them. The solution is to install manually.

You simply have to extract the drivers from the MSI package.

  1. Download the drivers
  2. start the setup file
  3. Go to temp
  4. Open the strange folder that was created (something along the lines of {32423-324235423-5234534634}
  5. Extract the MSI file using the commandline: msiexec /a MyMSIFile.msi /qb TARGETDIR=DirectoryToExtractTo
  6. You should now find the drivers in your target directory in \program files\Dell\Dell Mobile Broadband\Drivers\
  7. You can now install these drivers using the the device manager

To upgrade your cards firmware and flash hsdpa capability, download the firmware update from here

Start the update as administrator (that’s what I did…) and click a few times “next”. If you’re lucky and nothing went wrong, you should see this screen:

update firmware dell 5520

And be able to surf with 7,2 MBit/s :)

To enable GPS function:

  • Install the driver from the Dell Homepage (32 bit driver works fine on vista 64 bit)
  • go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Novatel Wireless\NextGenCommon
  • change “GPSHWStatus” from 0 to 1
  • reboot
  • Done!
  • Note: registry editing and firmware upgrade is not covered by our warranty, apply at your own risk!
